Overview
The Persian is a luxurious long-haired breed with an extremely flat face, large round eyes and a dense, silky coat. Calm, gentle and docile, it is one of the most iconic companion cats in the world.
History & Origin
Long-haired cats from Persia (Iran) reached Europe in the 1600s via trade and gifts to nobility. Selective breeding in Britain and France shaped the modern flat-faced Persian, which became a cornerstone of the cat fancy.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-to-large, cobby cat with a round head, short nose, small ears and a very long, thick double coat in an enormous range of colours and patterns, including the pointed Himalayan type.
Temperament
Persians are quiet, sweet and low-key, content to lounge and be admired. They are affectionate but undemanding, suiting calm households rather than lively, interactive ones.
Care & Grooming
Daily brushing is essential to prevent mats, plus regular eye cleaning for the flat face (tear staining is common). Indoor living is strongly recommended.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Brachycephalic breathing, polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and dental issues are concerns; health-tested lines and vet monitoring are vital.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
