Overview
The Cornish Rex is a slender, elegant breed with a tight, rippling marcel-wave short coat and an arched back. Playful, intelligent and social, it has an extremely soft, warm coat.
History & Origin
The first Cornish Rex kitten was born in Cornwall, England, in 1950 to a barn cat; its unique wavy coat proved a recessive mutation. Breeders refined it with Siamese and other lines.
Appearance & Coat
A small-to-medium, racy cat with a narrow head, large ears, a curved (“Roman”) nose and a washboard-style coat lacking guard hairs. The arched back and long legs give a greyhound silhouette.
Temperament
Cornish Rex are lively, affectionate and kitten-like for life, enjoying fetch and high perches. They are social and get along with everyone.
Care & Grooming
The thin coat offers little insulation — keep them warm and indoors, and bathe occasionally as oils build up. Minimal shedding.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Generally healthy; watch for heart issues in some lines.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
