Overview
The Turkish Angora is a graceful, fine-boned longhaired cat with a silky single coat and often striking odd-coloured (one blue, one amber) eyes. Intelligent, playful and affectionate, it is one of the oldest natural breeds.
History & Origin
Originating in Ankara (Angora), Turkey, this ancient breed was prized in Europe from the 1600s. It was later overshadowed by the Persian but preserved at the Ankara Zoo and revived in the 20th century.
Appearance & Coat
A small-to-medium, slender, elegant cat with a wedge head, large pointed ears and a long, fine single coat with a plume tail and ruff. White is traditional, but all colours exist.
Temperament
Angoras are smart, lively and people-oriented, often playful and a little mischievous. They bond closely and enjoy interactive games.
Care & Grooming
The single coat resists tangles and needs weekly brushing. They are agile climbers and appreciate vertical space.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–18 years. Generally healthy; white/odd-eyed lines can carry deafness, as in many white cats.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
