Overview
The Selkirk Rex is a medium-to-large cat with a plush, loose curly coat in both short and long hair, and a round face. Easygoing, patient and affectionate, it is sometimes called the “cat in sheep's clothing”.
History & Origin
The breed began with a curly-coated kitten born to a rescue cat in Montana, USA, in 1987; breeders crossed it with Persians, Exotics and British Shorthairs to fix the dominant curly gene.
Appearance & Coat
A sturdy, rounded cat with a broad head, full cheeks and a dense coat of random loose curls over the whole body (including whiskers). Both shorthair and longhair varieties exist in many colours.
Temperament
Selkirks are calm, tolerant and devoted, making them excellent family cats. They are playful but not demanding, and patient with children.
Care & Grooming
The curly coat needs gentle brushing to avoid breakage; never over-comb. Longhaired variety needs more frequent care.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Being outcrossed to brachycephalic breeds, watch for PKD/PKD-linked issues; choose tested lines.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
