Overview

A large alpine parrot, olive-green, famous for curiosity and mischievous problem-solving.

History & Origin

The Kea occurs naturally in New Zealand. Parrots (Psittaciformes) are a largely tropical and subtropical order found across the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australasia, from rainforest canopy to dry woodland and grassland. Many are forest dependent, and a high proportion are threatened by habitat loss and the wild-caught trade.

Appearance & Size

It is a Large (46-50cm) bird. Parrots are recognised by their hooked bill, upright posture, zygodactyl feet (two toes forward, two back) and often brilliant plumage. Sizes span tiny pygmy parrots to the large macaws and cockatoos.

Temperament & Behavior

Parrots are among the most intelligent birds, social, vocal and long-lived; many bond deeply with people. They need daily interaction, enrichment and training, and can become noisy or feather-pluck if bored or neglected.

Care & Husbandry

In the wild most parrots eat seeds, nuts, fruits, nectar and buds; companion birds need a formulated pellet base plus vegetables, limited fruit and the occasional nut, never an all-seed diet. Parrots require a spacious cage with safe perches, toys and foraging enrichment, several hours of supervised out-of-cage time daily, and a committed, knowledgeable owner. Many species live for decades.

Health & Lifespan

Common issues include feather-destructive behaviour, psittacosis, beak and feather disease, obesity and egg-binding. With good care many parrots live 20-40 years or far longer.

Popularity & Recognition

Parrots are among the most popular companion birds in the world, yet many species are endangered; responsible captive breeding and CITES controls are central to their conservation.
