Egyptian Mau
The only naturally spotted domestic breed, with a silver, bronze or smoke spotted coat, green eyes, and a fast, agile, loyal temperament.
Overview
The Egyptian Mau is the only naturally spotted domestic cat breed, with randomly placed spots in silver, bronze or smoke and striking gooseberry-green eyes. Agile, fast and loyal, it has a distinctive musical voice and a deep bond with its owner.
History & Origin
Spotted cats appear in ancient Egyptian art, and the modern Mau descends from cats brought from Egypt to Italy and then the US in the 1950s. It remains the sole naturally occurring spotted pedigree, not a man-made hybrid.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, lithe cat with a slightly rounded wedge head, large alert ears and a long spotted coat. A characteristic “mascara” line runs from the eyes, and the body carries random (not patterned) spots.
Temperament
Maus are devoted to their families, gentle with children and famously fast (they can run over 30 mph). They are vocal with a unique chirp and prefer a secure, familiar home.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs little more than weekly brushing. Maus enjoy warm spots, climbing and interactive play; some are sensitive to change and benefit from routine.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Generally healthy; the breed can be prone to allergies and periodontal disease, so dental care helps.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
