Overview

A small breed distinguished by a fluffy wool mane around the head and neck, resembling a lion. Friendly, curious and playful, with a double or single mane gene.

History & Origin

The Lionhead is a domestic rabbit breed that developed in Belgium / United Kingdom. Like most modern pet rabbit breeds it was shaped through selective breeding for its distinctive type, size and temperament, and is now kept widely as a companion animal around the world.

Appearance & Coat

It falls into the small (1-1.6kg) size group. It is characterized by a long, dense wool coat.

Temperament

The Lionhead is typically friendly, playful, curious. With patient, gentle handling from a young age it becomes a confident and rewarding companion; like all rabbits it prefers calm surroundings and dislikes rough or sudden handling.

Care & Grooming

Good rabbit care is the same foundation for every breed: a diet built on unlimited grass or timothy hay (about 70–80% of intake), a measured amount of high-fibre pellets, and a daily portion of leafy greens. Fresh water must always be available. House rabbits should live indoors in a safe, enrichment-filled space, litter-train easily, and need daily supervised exercise outside the cage. Long- or wool-coated breeds must be brushed several times a week to prevent mats and wool block (ingested fur), and may need occasional clipping around the rear.

Health & Lifespan

A well-cared Lionhead commonly lives 8-12 years, and many reach their early teens. Rabbits have continuously growing teeth, so dental disease, gut stasis (a life-threatening slowdown of digestion) and respiratory infections ("snuffles") are the most common problems. Long-coated or less mobile rabbits are also prone to flystrike in warm weather. Annual checks with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian, spaying/neutering, and a hay-led diet prevent most issues.

Recognition

The Lionhead is a popular pet and exhibition rabbit. Breed standards and registrations are maintained by national rabbit councils such as the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) and the British Rabbit Council (BRC), and it is widely shown by fanciers.
