Chausie
A large hybrid breed from domestic cats crossed with the Jungle Cat, with a tall athletic build and bold tabby coat; intelligent and energetic.
Overview
The Chausie is a large hybrid breed developed by crossing domestic cats with the Jungle Cat (Felis chaus), with a tall athletic build and a bold tabby coat. Intelligent, energetic and loyal, it needs experienced owners.
History & Origin
Domestic–Jungle Cat hybrids date back centuries, but the Chausie was formalised as a breed in the United States in the 1990s from selected outcrosses to achieve a fully domestic temperament.
Appearance & Coat
A tall, long-legged, deep-chested cat with a short coat in black, brown ticked tabby and silver. The large ears, angular face and rangy build recall its wild ancestor.
Temperament
Chausies are confident, active and devoted to their people, with a dog-like willingness to learn. They are not for sedentary homes — they need space, climbing and engagement.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs minimal grooming. High energy means secure indoor room, cat trees and daily play; some early-generation cats require special diets.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Later generations are generally healthy; choose ethical, tested breeders and watch early-gen dietary sensitivities.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA.
