Overview
The Russian Blue is a graceful cat with a plush, double-layered blue-grey short coat, vivid green eyes and a shy but devoted temperament. Quiet, gentle and very loyal to close family members, it sheds little.
History & Origin
Believed to have travelled from the Russian port of Arkhangelsk by ship, the breed was shown in Britain in the 19th century as the “Archangel Cat”. It was preserved through war years via careful line-breeding.
Appearance & Coat
A fine-boned, muscular cat with a wedge head, large pointed ears and a short, dense double coat that stands out from the body (the famous “plush toy” feel) in even blue-grey.
Temperament
Russian Blues are reserved with strangers but affectionate and playful with their family. They are sensitive, polite and quiet, preferring a stable, calm home.
Care & Grooming
The double coat needs only weekly brushing. They are clean, low-shedding and thrive indoors; they appreciate gentle routine and a secure environment.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is a long 15–20 years. A hardy breed with few hereditary issues; standard preventive care keeps them well.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
