Overview
The Black Domestic is a solid-black domestic cat with yellow or green eyes, calm and independent yet deeply loyal once bonded. In Chinese folk tradition it is often regarded as protective against misfortune.
History & Origin
A timeless colour of the Chinese domestic cat, black cats have been companions and barn cats for centuries; contrary to some Western superstition, in China black cats are linked with warding off evil.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, sleek cat with a short, dense all-black coat (sometimes with faint ghost tabby markings in sunlight) and striking yellow, copper or green eyes.
Temperament
Black domestics are composed and self-assured, affectionate with their chosen people. They are intelligent and can be playful while remaining independent.
Care & Grooming
Minimal short-coat care. In summer, black fur can overheat in direct sun, so provide shade; otherwise they are easy keepers.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 15–20 years. Robust and healthy; some studies even suggest black cats may have certain genetic disease resistances.
Recognition
A colour of the domestic cat (no separate registry recognition).
