Korat
An ancient Thai breed with a silver-blue short coat, luminous green eyes and a heart-shaped face; gentle, intelligent and devoted.
Overview
The Korat is an ancient Thai breed with a silver-blue short coat, luminous green eyes and a characteristic heart-shaped face. Gentle, intelligent and highly devoted to its human family, it was once regarded as a symbol of good luck.
History & Origin
Depicted in Thai manuscripts dating back centuries (the “smooth-coated cat of the Si-Sawat”), the Korat comes from the Korat Plateau of north-east Thailand. It was first imported to the US in the 1950s and remains rare.
Appearance & Coat
A small-to-medium, semi-cobby cat with a single short coat of even blue with silver tips that shimmer. The large round green eyes, heart-shaped face and broad chest define the breed.
Temperament
Korats are gentle, quiet and deeply attached to their people, often bonding with one household. They are playful and intelligent but can be shy with strangers, preferring a calm home.
Care & Grooming
The fine single coat sheds little and needs only weekly brushing. Sensitive and devoted, they thrive on routine and gentle companionship.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. A natural breed with few genetic disorders; a known concern is gangliosidosis (GM1) in some lines, so responsible testing matters.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
