Overview
The Calico Domestic is a cat with a tricolor coat of white, black and orange patches. Almost always female (the colour requires two X chromosomes), it is gentle, calm and affectionate, and widely loved in China as a symbol of good fortune.
History & Origin
The calico pattern is a treasured colour of the Chinese domestic cat, long associated with luck and prosperity in folk belief (“san hua” cats are said to bring wealth).
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized cat with a short coat in irregular white, black and orange/cream patches (some show dilute blue-and-cream). The vivid patchwork is unique to each cat.
Temperament
Calicos are typically sweet-natured, calm and devoted to their family. They are affectionate without being demanding and get along well in homes.
Care & Grooming
Easy short-coat maintenance with weekly brushing. They are adaptable and make gentle companions.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 15–20 years. Healthy and hardy; the rarity of male calicos (sterile) is a genetic curiosity rather than a health issue.
Recognition
A colour pattern of the domestic cat (no separate registry recognition).
