Komondor
The Hungarian 'mop dog' with a corded white coat, a massive guardian that blends into the flock it protects.
Overview. The Komondor is a giant Hungarian livestock guardian famous for its long, corded white coat that resembles a mop or a flock of sheep, helping it blend in while guarding.
History & Origin
An ancient breed brought by Magyar settlers, the Komondor has guarded Hungarian flocks for a thousand years with its imposing presence and courage.
Appearance & Coat
Massive and muscular, its coat forms naturally into heavy, felt-like cords that protect against weather and predators. The cords take years to develop fully.
Temperament
Calm but commanding, fiercely protective of its charges, and wary of outsiders.
Care & Exercise
Coat care is specialized—cords must be kept clean and separated—but it is otherwise low-shedding. Moderate exercise.
FCI Recognition
Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
