Overview

Extraordinary for its extremely flattened, flexible shell, made of thin bone with large gaps between the ribs, allowing it to squeeze into narrow rock crevices for shelter. When threatened it inflates its body to wedge itself in place. This unique flattened morphology is an adaptation to rocky habitats, but it is heavily collected for the pet trade.

Classification

The Pancake Tortoise belongs to the suborder Cryptodira (hidden-neck turtles) and the family Testudinidae. It is the family of true tortoises — exclusively terrestrial turtles with domed shells and stumpy, elephantine limbs. Its scientific name is Malacochersus tornieri.

Appearance & Distinguishing Features

Members have high-domed, heavily ossified carapaces and column-like hind limbs adapted for walking on land rather than swimming. Size ranges from a few centimetres to the giant tortoises exceeding 1 m.

Habitat & Distribution

They occupy a wide range of terrestrial habitats across Africa, Madagascar, Eurasia, the Mediterranean, and the Americas, from deserts to tropical forests and grasslands.

Diet & Feeding

They are predominantly herbivorous, grazing on grasses, leaves, flowers, and succulent plants, with some species favouring fruit.

Behavior & Conservation

Tortoises are celebrated for exceptional longevity, with many species living several decades and the largest surpassing a century. Several popular species are kept as pets, while others are threatened by habitat loss and collection.

Popularity & Recognition

Among the most familiar pet reptiles worldwide (such as the sulcata and Russian tortoise), they are also cultural symbols of slowness and endurance.
