Overview
A long silvery ribbon-like fish with a fang-like mouth, one of China's most important food fish. Native to Western Pacific, it is a popular choice among aquarists for its distinctive appearance and behavior.
History & Origin
Largehead Hairtail originates from Western Pacific. It has been kept and selectively bred in the aquarium hobby for generations, producing many color forms and regional variants developed through captive breeding.
Appearance & Size
Largehead Hairtail is a large fish, generally measuring about 60–200 cm when fully grown. Its body shape and species-specific coloration make it easy to recognize among Commercial Marine Fish.
Temperament
Largehead Hairtail is generally territorial and can be aggressive toward smaller or similar-shaped tankmates; keep it with robust, size-compatible species and provide ample space and visual barriers.
Care & Husbandry
A marine species best suited to experienced saltwater aquarists, it requires a mature, well-established aquarium with stable salinity (around 1.023–1.025 specific gravity), strong filtration and pristine water quality. Given its size, provide a spacious tank with robust filtration and room to swim. Feed a varied diet of high-quality prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen items, and quarantine new arrivals before adding them to the display.
Health & Lifespan
With good water quality and a balanced diet, Largehead Hairtail typically lives 5–10 years in captivity. Watch for common aquarium ailments such as parasites, fungal infections and stress-related disease, and maintain stable parameters to keep it thriving.
Popularity & Recognition
These commercially important marine fish bridge the ornamental and food-fish worlds, valued both on the plate and in large display tanks.
