Overview
The European Shorthair is a hardy, medium-sized cat with a short dense coat in many colours, descended from the working farm cats of Europe. Healthy, independent yet sociable, it remains a strong, natural hunter.
History & Origin
Developed in the mid-20th century from native European domestic cats to standardise a robust, typey companion distinct from the British and American Shorthairs, it is especially popular across Scandinavia.
Appearance & Coat
A well-proportioned, muscular cat with a rounded head, medium ears and a dense, easy-care coat in virtually every colour and pattern, including tabby and bicolour.
Temperament
European Shorthairs are balanced and adaptable: sociable with their family, polite with visitors and intelligent without being demanding. They retain a keen hunting drive.
Care & Grooming
Weekly brushing suffices. Their athleticism means they enjoy outdoor access or a stimulating indoor environment with climbing opportunities.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–18 years. Bred for soundness, the breed has few inherited problems; standard vaccinations and a good diet keep them thriving.
Recognition
Recognised by FIFe, WCF and other European registries.
