Overview
The Turkish Van is a rare breed known for the “van pattern” — a white body with coloured head and tail — a chalky semi-long coat and amber or blue eyes. Athletic, playful and famously fond of water.
History & Origin
An ancient landrace from the Lake Van region of Turkey, prized locally for its swimming ability. It was brought to the West in the 1950s and developed as a breed.
Appearance & Coat
A large, muscular cat with a broad chest, semi-long cashmere-like coat that is chalky to the touch (minimal undercoat) and the signature coloured “cap and tail”. Eye colour may be amber, blue or odd-eyed.
Temperament
Turkish Vans are energetic, intelligent and adventurous, with a well-known love of swimming and fetching in water. They are affectionate but independent-minded.
Care & Grooming
The coat is low-maintenance (little undercoat) and needs only weekly brushing. They need space and enrichment; water play is a bonus.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. A natural, healthy breed with few hereditary issues.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
