Overview

The Savannah is a tall, striking hybrid of a domestic cat and the African Serval, with a bold spotted coat, long legs and huge ears. Highly intelligent, energetic and loyal, it is often compared to a dog in behaviour and needs experienced owners.

History & Origin

First produced in the United States in 1986 from a Serval–domestic cat cross, the Savannah is one of the newest and tallest domestic breeds. Early generations (F1–F3) are large and regulated in some regions; later generations are kept as pets.

Appearance & Coat

A large, leggy, athletic cat with a spotted or marbled short coat in brown, silver or black smoke, and the Serval's long neck, big rounded ears and hooded eyes. They can stand remarkably tall.

Temperament

Savannahs are confident, curious and trainable — many walk on leads, fetch and even open doors. They bond deeply with their family but need stimulation and space, and are not for first-time owners.

Care & Grooming

The short coat needs minimal grooming. They require secure indoor space, climbing structures and lots of play; some jurisdictions restrict early-generation ownership.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 15–20 years. Generally robust, though outcross hybrids may inherit varied risks; choose an ethical, health-tested breeder.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA (and variously by other registries by generation).
