Overview
The Chinese Li Hua (also called the Dragon Li) is a natural Chinese breed with a distinctive brown-spotted “lihua” tabby coat, a sturdy athletic body and bright green eyes. Intelligent, independent and a strong hunter, it is nevertheless affectionate with family.
History & Origin
One of China's few formalised native breeds, the Li Hua descends from the country's ubiquitous farm and village cats, celebrated in Chinese culture for centuries as a capable mouser and loyal companion.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, well-muscled cat with a rounded head, large almond green eyes and a short, dense brown mackerel- or spotted-tabby coat with the classic “M” forehead markings and ticked fur.
Temperament
Li Hua cats are smart, alert and somewhat independent, with a strong prey drive. They are devoted to their family, good with children and famously robust and easy to keep.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs only weekly brushing. Hardy and low-maintenance, they suit both novice owners and active homes; they enjoy safe outdoor access or enrichment indoors.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is a long 15–20 years. As a landrace-derived breed, they are generally very healthy and disease-resistant.
Recognition
Recognised by CAA (China) and listed by TICA as a foundational/experimental breed.
