Overview
The Manx is a tailless breed from the Isle of Man, with a rounded body, powerful hind legs and a rabbit-like gait. Gentle, intelligent and devoted, it is famous for its complete absence of a tail.
History & Origin
A natural mutation on the Isle of Man, the tailless trait became fixed over centuries of isolation. The Manx is one of the oldest recognised breeds and a symbol of the island.
Appearance & Coat
A compact, rounded cat with a broad chest, short front legs and longer hind legs giving a hop. Tail length varies: rumpy (none) to longy (full). Dense double coat in short or long (Cymric) forms.
Temperament
Manx are dog-like, loyal and playful, often retrieving and greeting owners. They are good with families and other animals.
Care & Grooming
Routine coat care. The main concern is spinal health — ethical breeders avoid severe tailless-associated defects (“Manx syndrome”).
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Responsible breeding minimises spinal/ bowel issues; choose tested lines.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
