Overview

The Birman is a long-haired colourpoint breed with white “gloved” paws, deep blue eyes and a silky coat. Sweet, social and devoted, it was once believed to be a sacred temple cat of Burma.

History & Origin

Legend ties the Birman to Burmese temples, but the modern breed was reconstructed in France in the 1920s–40s after near-loss during the wars, using pointed cats with the distinctive white paws.

Appearance & Coat

A medium-to-large cat with a rounded head, Roman nose and a long, silky single coat (no dense undercoat). The body is pale with darker points and pure white mittens on all four feet.

Temperament

Birmans are affectionate, gentle and sociable, getting along with everyone including children and other pets. They are playful without being hyperactive.

Care & Grooming

The silky coat resists mats and needs only weekly brushing. Generally easy to care for; they enjoy companionship and play.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 12–16 years. Robust overall; occasional heart and kidney screening recommended by breeders.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
