Munchkin
A breed with naturally short legs from a genetic mutation, giving a low, elongated body; playful, outgoing and surprisingly agile, in short or long hair.
Overview
The Munchkin is a breed with naturally short legs caused by a genetic mutation, giving a low, elongated body and a normal-sized head. Playful, outgoing and surprisingly agile, it comes in both short and long hair.
History & Origin
Named after the “Munchkins” in The Wizard of Oz, short-legged cats have appeared worldwide for decades; the breed was formalised in the United States in the 1990s from a Louisiana stray.
Appearance & Coat
A small-to-medium cat with very short fore and hind legs, a moderate body and a plush coat (all colours/patterns) in shorthair and longhair forms. Front legs are often slightly shorter than the rear.
Temperament
Munchkins are confident, social and kittenish, famous for “ferreting” (sitting up like a meerkat) and racing around despite short legs. They are great with families.
Care & Grooming
Coat care is routine for the length. Provide ramps or low furniture and avoid obesity to protect the spine and joints.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–14 years. The short-leg gene is dominant and not the same as chondrodysplasia-causing forms, but ethical breeders screen spinal/ joint health.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA; some registries (e.g. CFA, GCCF) do not accept it on welfare grounds.
