American Shorthair
A sturdy, medium-to-large working cat descended from European settlers' cats, with a dense short coat and a calm, good-natured temperament.
Overview
The American Shorthair is a sturdy, medium-to-large working cat descended from the cats that travelled with European settlers to North America. It has a dense short coat, a broad head and round eyes, and is valued as a calm, good-natured and adaptable family companion.
History & Origin
These cats arrived with early colonists and earned their keep as ship and farm ratters. Selected over generations for hardiness and a pleasant temperament, the breed was recognised by the CFA in 1906 (originally as the Domestic Shorthair) and re-named American Shorthair in 1966.
Appearance & Coat
A powerfully built cat with a rounded, broad head, medium-large ears and a thick, well-muscled body. The short, dense coat comes in more than 80 colours and patterns, with silver tabby being especially popular.
Temperament
American Shorthairs are easy-going, gentle and moderately playful — affectionate without being demanding. They are patient with children and other pets and make an excellent choice for first-time owners.
Care & Grooming
A weekly brushing controls shedding and keeps the plush coat healthy. Their strong hunting instinct means they enjoy play-hunting toys; otherwise care is straightforward.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is a notably long 15–20 years. The breed is robust, but watch for hip dysplasia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; routine vet checks and a balanced diet help maintain their famously good condition.
Recognition
Accepted by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
