Overview

The wild ancestor of the domestic chicken, colorful with a red comb and iridescent plumage.

History & Origin

The Red Junglefowl occurs naturally in South & Southeast Asia. Galliformes — chickens, pheasants, quail, turkeys, peafowl and guineafowl — are largely ground-dwelling birds of forests, scrub, grassland and farmland on every continent except Antarctica.

Appearance & Size

It is a Medium (1-2kg) bird. They are robust, heavy-bodied birds with strong legs for scratching, often sexually dimorphic plumage, and in many males elaborate trains, spurs or crests.

Temperament & Behavior

Galliformes are mostly social, ground-foraging and docile; domestic forms are among the most tractable and widely kept birds in the world.

Care & Husbandry

They are omnivorous scratch-feeders, taking seeds, grains, leaves, insects and small animals; domestic kinds thrive on balanced poultry feed with access to forage. They need secure ground pens with shelters, dust-bathing areas, perches and a measured feed; they are hardy and well suited to smallholdings and backyards.

Health & Lifespan

Watch for coccidiosis, Marek's disease, respiratory diseases and parasites; good biosecurity matters. In care they commonly live 5-10 years.

Popularity & Recognition

The domestic chicken is the most numerous bird species on Earth, kept for eggs, meat and exhibition; peafowl and pheasants are iconic ornamental gamebirds.
