Scottish Straight
The straight-eared variety of the Scottish Fold, sharing the round face and sweet temperament but with normal upright ears, avoiding the fold gene's joint issues.
Overview
The Scottish Straight is the straight-eared variety of the Scottish Fold, sharing the round face and sweet temperament but with normal upright ears. By avoiding the fold gene, it escapes the joint problems associated with folded ears.
History & Origin
Scottish Folds descend from a folded-eared barn cat found in Scotland in 1961. Breeders mate folds with straight-eared cats to produce healthy litters; the straight-eared offspring are the Scottish Straight.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, rounded cat with a round head, large round eyes and normal straight ears, in short (or semi-long) dense coats of every colour. The sweet “owl-like” expression is shared with the Fold.
Temperament
Scottish Straights are affectionate, calm and adaptable, often described as soft-voiced and gentle. They get along well with children and other pets.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs weekly brushing. Unlike folded relatives, they have no special skeletal concerns, making them a healthier choice for the look.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Robust when free of the fold gene; standard preventive care applies.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF (often as Scottish Fold straight variant).
