Overview

The only chameleon found in Europe, gray-green with the classic color-change behavior.

History & Origin

The chameleon is native to Europe / Middle East. It belongs to the family Chameleons, a lineage of lizards distributed across those regions and kept both in the wild and by specialist reptile keepers.

Appearance & Size

Common Chameleon is a small to medium (30–45 cm) lizard.

Temperament

It shows the typical temperament of its group—research the species for handling guidance.

Care & Husbandry

Chameleons are insectivorous and sensitive to husbandry error. They require a tall, well-ventilated screened enclosure with ample foliage, a temperature gradient, strong UVB and isolated misting or a drip system for drinking. Avoid handling—they are visual, stress-prone ambush hunters best observed rather than cuddled.

Health & Lifespan

Highly susceptible to dehydration, renal stress, respiratory infection and metabolic bone disease. They hide illness until critical—preventive husbandry (ventilation, hydration, UVB, temperature) is everything. Veterinary reptile care is essential. In captivity a healthy individual may live around 5–8 years.

Popularity & Recognition

Chameleons are the most visually iconic lizards—masters of colour change, independently swivelling turret eyes, and ballistic tongues. Veiled and panther chameleons dominate the pet trade; many are threatened by habitat loss.
