Overview

The Oriental Shorthair is a sleek, fine-boned cat with a wedge-shaped head, enormous ears and a short glossy coat available in more than 300 colours and patterns. Highly vocal, intelligent and intensely social, it demands interaction.

History & Origin

Developed in Britain from Siamese lines in the 1950s–70s to express the pointed ancestry in solid, tabby and tortie colours. It shares the Oriental body with the Colourpoint (Foreign) cats but without the point restriction.

Appearance & Coat

A svelte, tubular cat with long legs, a whip-like tail and a short close-lying coat. The elongated wedge head and huge low-set ears give its unmistakable exotic silhouette.

Temperament

Orientals are extremely affectionate, chatty and needy of attention — they will “supervise” every activity. They bond hard with their people and suit homes that can give them lots of time.

Care & Grooming

The short coat needs only occasional brushing. High sociability means they are happiest with a feline friend and plenty of play; they are true indoor companions.

Health & Lifespan

Lifespan is 12–15 years. Generally healthy, with some lines prone to amyloidosis and dental issues; reputable breeding and care help.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
