Overview
The Siberian is a large, triple-layered longhaired breed from Russia, with a dense water-repellent coat and a lively, gentle personality. It is notably more tolerable for many allergy sufferers.
History & Origin
A centuries-old Russian forest cat from the taiga, valued for its hunting skill and cold tolerance. It reached the West in the 1990s and quickly became popular, partly for its lower allergen profile.
Appearance & Coat
A powerful, semi-cobby cat with a rounded head, stocky body and a lavish triple coat with a thick ruff and “knicker” breeches. All colours are accepted; the coat is surprisingly easy to maintain.
Temperament
Siberians are playful, affectionate and dog-like, often learning to fetch and perch on shoulders. They are confident, good with children and other pets.
Care & Grooming
Despite the thick fur, the coat resists mats and needs only weekly brushing. They enjoy climbing and interactive play; many love water.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 11–15 years (some longer). A robust natural breed; standard health screening applies.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
