Cymric
The longhaired variety of the Manx, tailless or with a partial tail, with a dense double coat; gentle, playful and devoted.
Overview
The Cymric is the longhaired variety of the Manx, tailless or with a partial tail, with a dense double coat. Gentle, playful and devoted, it is known for a rounded, rabbit-like rear.
History & Origin
The long-haired Manx appeared naturally on the Isle of Man and was named “Cymric” (Welsh for Welsh) by Canadian breeders in the 1960s to distinguish the longhaired form.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, compact cat with a round head, short front legs, a dense double coat (longer than the Manx) and a rounded rump. Tail length varies from none (rumpy) to full.
Temperament
Cymrics are sweet-natured, playful and loyal, often dog-like in following owners. They are good with families and other pets.
Care & Grooming
The double coat needs several brushings weekly. As with Manx, monitor spinal health (see Manx syndrome).
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Responsible breeding avoids severe tailless-associated spinal defects; choose ethical breeders.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
