Overview
The British Longhair is a longhaired version of the British Shorthair with a plush semi-long coat, round face and calm, sweet temperament. Quiet, undemanding and affectionate, it suits novices.
History & Origin
Long-haired kittens arising from British Shorthair breedings (often with Persian influence) were recognised as a distinct variety in the late 20th century in Britain and Europe.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-to-large, cobby cat with a round head, chubby cheeks and a dense, soft semi-long coat in many colours (blue most iconic). The teddy-bear look is shared with its shorthaired cousin.
Temperament
British Longhairs are easy-going, gentle and tolerant, happy to observe rather than demand. They are affectionate on their own terms.
Care & Grooming
Needs more frequent brushing than the British Shorthair to prevent mats. Watch weight — they love food.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–17 years. As for British Shorthair: watch HCM and obesity.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
