Overview
The Somali is the longhaired version of the Abyssinian, with a ticked coat, a bushy fox-like tail and expressive eyes. Active, playful and affectionate, it has a striking wild look with a gentle nature.
History & Origin
Long-haired kittens surfaced in Abyssinian litters for decades before breeders embraced them in the 1960s–70s, naming the breed after Somalia (neighbouring Abyssinia/Ethiopia).
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, lithe cat with a rounded wedge head, large ears and a long, softly ticked coat with a full ruff and a magnificent bottle-brush tail. Ruddy, red, blue and fawn colours.
Temperament
Somalis are bright, busy and affectionate “little foxes” who love to climb, explore and play. They are social and bond with their family while staying playful.
Care & Grooming
The silky coat needs only weekly brushing to avoid tangles. High energy means they need enrichment and play.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–16 years. Similar screening to Abyssinian (PKdef, retinal atrophy) advised.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
