Overview
The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, with a shaggy long coat, tufted ears and a thick ringed tail. Friendly, dog-like and gentle, these “gentle giants” are hardy and excellent with families.
History & Origin
A natural American breed from New England, likely descended from ships' cats and long-haired arrivals that adapted to harsh winters. It is among the oldest native North American breeds and a beloved state cat of Maine.
Appearance & Coat
A large, muscular cat with a rectangular body, ruff around the neck, lynx-tipped ears and a long flowing coat that is shorter on the shoulders. All colours except pointed are accepted.
Temperament
Maine Coons are sociable, intelligent and playful well into adulthood, often enjoying water and “chirping” rather than meowing. They are affectionate but not clingy.
Care & Grooming
The heavy coat needs several brushings weekly to avoid mats, especially in winter. They are active and benefit from space and climbing.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia; responsible breeding is important.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
