A sleek, all-black shorthair resembling a miniature panther, developed from Burmese and black American Shorthairs, with copper-to-gold eyes.

Overview

The Bombay is a sleek, all-black shorthair deliberately bred to resemble a miniature black panther. It pairs a muscular, rounded body with large copper-to-gold eyes and a glossy jet-black coat that should have no hint of rust.

History & Origin

Developed in the United States in the 1950s–60s by crossing sable Burmese with black American Shorthairs, the Bombay was created to produce a consistently black, compact cat with a friendly, people-oriented nature.

Appearance & Coat

Medium-sized and substantial, the Bombay has a rounded head, full cheeks and a short, satin-like black coat with no undercoat. The striking copper or gold eyes are a defining feature and deepen with age.

Temperament

Bombays are social, people-oriented and dog-like in their loyalty, often following owners from room to room. They are affectionate and playful but dislike long periods alone, thriving in attentive households.

Care & Grooming

The short coat sheds very little and needs only occasional wiping with a chamois to enhance its sheen. Like Burmese ancestors, Bombays are warm-seeking and enjoy indoor comfort.

Health & Lifespan

Average lifespan is 12–16 years. Generally healthy, though some lines inherit Burmese-related issues such as craniofacial defects or heart conditions; reputable breeding matters.

Recognition

Recognised by TICA, CFA, WCF and the GCCF.
