Overview
The California Spangled is a rare breed developed to resemble a small leopard, with a short spotted coat and a wild yet affectionate temperament. Athletic and loyal, it was bred largely in the United States as a conservation-minded homage to wild cats.
History & Origin
Created in the 1970s–80s by Paul Casey, using diverse breeds (including Siamese, Abyssinian and British Shorthair) to recapture the look of spotted wild felids and raise awareness of their plight.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-to-large, muscular cat with a short, spotted coat in black, brown, blue, bronze, gold, red or silver, and a long body with a deep chest. The contrast spots sit over a lighter ground.
Temperament
California Spangleds are active, intelligent and devoted to their people, with a confident, playful streak. They are affectionate but retain an athletic, “wildcat” energy.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs only weekly brushing. They appreciate climbing space and interactive play to channel their athleticism.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. A rare breed with no major known disorders; choose carefully given limited numbers.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA (and historically the CFA as experimental).
