The rarest Belgian shepherd, with a wiry fawn coat and a steadfast, protective character.

Overview. The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties, distinguished by its wiry, tousled fawn coat and a calm, protective nature.

History & Origin

Named for the Château de Laeken, it historically guarded linen fields and flocks in Belgium, and is the least common of the Belgian shepherd types today.

Appearance & Coat

Medium-sized and square, with a rough, wiry coat in fawn with traces of black overlay. Its rugged look sets it apart from its smooth and long-coated cousins.

Temperament

Hardy, watchful, and loyal, it is affectionate with family and naturally suspicious of threats.

Care & Exercise

Needs regular exercise and hand-stripping or clipping of the wiry coat a few times a year.

FCI Recognition

Recognized by the FCI in Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs).
