Overview
The British Shorthair is a chunky, round-faced cat with a plush, dense short coat famously seen in blue-grey but available in many colours and patterns. Quiet, undemanding and sweet-natured, it loves routine and suits calm households.
History & Origin
One of the oldest English breeds, its ancestors are the robust cats pictured in Roman-era Britain. It was refined from native street cats and nearly vanished during the two World Wars, later revived through crosses with Persians.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-to-large, cobby cat with a broad chest, round head, chubby cheeks and large round eyes (copper in the blue variety). The dense, crisp coat stands away from the body, giving a teddy-bear look.
Temperament
British Shorthairs are calm, independent and not overly demanding of attention. They are affectionate on their own terms, tolerant and easy to live with, making them ideal for first-time and quieter homes.
Care & Grooming
Weekly brushing manages seasonal shedding. They are prone to weight gain, so portion control and play are important — the breed loves food a little too much.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–17 years. Watch for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and obesity; a measured diet and annual check-ups keep them healthy.
Recognition
Accepted by TICA, CFA, WCF, FIFe and the GCCF.
