Toyger
A rare breed bred to resemble a miniature tiger, with bold striped markings on a short orange coat and a calm, sociable temperament.
Overview
The Toyger is a rare breed deliberately bred to resemble a miniature tiger, with bold broken stripes on a short orange-to-brown coat and a muscular, medium-sized body. Calm, sociable and gentle, it is a striking companion.
History & Origin
Developed in the United States from the 1980s by crossing Bengals with striped domestic shorthairs (and some Burmese influence) to evoke a “toy tiger” in form and movement.
Appearance & Coat
A medium-sized, athletic cat with a slightly rounded, muscular frame, small rounded ears and a short coat marked with vertical, circular “branching” stripes and a vivid contrast. The goal is a tiger-like flow of pattern.
Temperament
Toygers are affectionate, outgoing and good with children and other pets. They are active but not hyper, and retain a calm, confident demeanour.
Care & Grooming
The short coat needs only occasional brushing. They enjoy play and social contact and adapt well to family homes.
Health & Lifespan
Lifespan is 12–15 years. Still a developing breed; choose ethical breeders and monitor general health.
Recognition
Recognised by TICA (championship status).
